Discover the biosphere reserve

The biosphere reserve is a special region with a high level of quality of life for visitors and residents. It is an area which demonstates how activities in the field of economy and tourism can develop in an innovative way in harmony with nature and environment. This is why it is awarded with an international quality certification by the UNESCO. There are around 651 biosphere reserve world wide which are spread in 120 countries (as of 2015). To be more specific, there are 15 UNESCO awarded biosphere reserve in Germany. The biosphere reserve on the Swabian Alb is unique with its plateau and different scenery. The diversity derives from the different geological conditions, climate and the long traditions of land use.  

2005 was the starting point of the consideration of the Swabial Alb, as the beatutiful reserve was only an abandoned and former military training area. It was agreed that the outstanding natural and historical area which is about 6,700 ha needs be preserved. The surrounding citites and communities supported the large-scale project. Also, nature conversation associations were highly commited and supported the project, which became a big sucess...the UNESCO biosphere reserve.
